What is TMJ?

At Enchanted Smiles, the TMJ / TMD treatment starts with a comprehensive clinical examination, followed by the assessment of the activity of cranio-facial muscles through electromyography.

The next step consists of muscle relaxation through transneuromuscular stimulation (TENS); computerized software captures the initial relationship between the upper and the lower jaw and constantly monitors TMJ alignment. After data analysis, Dr. Caracioni adjusts the spatial relationship between the upper and the lower jaw until the tension in the muscles reads at its lowest level, then takes an impression of the corrected bite.

From this impression the lab will create a neuromuscular orthotic device which the patient will wear to relief the tension in the TM joint, thus the pain associated; orthotic devices can be mobile or fixed.

Following succesful remission of symptoms, a permanent solution involving dental work is evaluated, proposed and discussed with the patient.
